As part of its capacity building program, MAIN organizes in collaboration of AMIR a training on Ecological and Social Transition.
The course will provide to the participants an introduction into the concepts of the Ecological and Social Transition (EST) and the actual activities and opportunities that can be implemented to support the generation of resiliencies, enhance social and economic integration, as well as protecting ecosystems.
Currently, clients of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and the MFIs themselves face additional challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, reduced soil and crop productivity, environmental degradation, and social exclusion. These challenges affect poor households and microenterprises (both in the rural and urban sectors), the rural and agricultural sector, and therefore the clients of MFIs (and by implication the MFIs themselves). This undermines the social inclusion mission of MFIs, as well as their financial viability. The ecological and social transition (EST) is therefore a necessity for MFIs to ensure their financial sustainability as well as the realization of their social mission in a climate change scenario. With the consideration of assessing and managing climate vulnerabilities, as well as providing services and products to build the resilience of clients of MFIs and preserve ecosystems. The EST is not just about triple bottom line financing, or environmental protection, but about providing the necessary support for clients and their socio-economic situation.
The course will be delivered in 3 days.
The Global objective is to provide participants to the course the necessary elements to understand the need and the opportunity of the Ecological and Social Transition (EST) and how to adapt their practices and activities to grab such opportunity.
Specific objectives and expected results
The specific objective of the course is to provide to the participants the practical tools and elements to start engaging into EST in their own practices and institutions.
At the end of the course the participants will:
- have a first understanding of the EST, both its environmental and social aspects, and how this could be introduced in their institutions and activities
- understand the basis of how to develop and implement an environmental strategy
- Understand the basis of how to identify and manage the vulnerability to climate change, environmental degradation, energy poverty and poor access to water and sanitation of its clients and institution.
- understand the basis of how to identify and manage the adverse environmental impacts of its clients and their institution
- understand the basis of how to develop and provide green financial and non-financial products and services
- Understand the linkages between environmental and social transition, as well as the relation of the EST with key items including SDGs and gender.
- Be ready to start to adapt and implement in their institutions and practices the concepts, lessons learnt, and best practices learnt during the course, and start their own EST.
Expected results from the course
The course is dedicated to Professional of Microfinance and Inclusive finance sector, including but not limited to:
- management of MFIs, or local banks;
- management of networks and associations of MFIs;
- investors in inclusive finance;

The training will run from August 8-10, 2022, Kigali (Rwanda).
Deadline for registration is July 15th, 2022.
The following requirements should be fulfilled to attend the program.
- A registration fee of USD 150 as member, to be paid to MAIN and USD 200 for non-member, USD 400 for international participants who are MAIN member

- Participants who failed to pay the registration fee will not be accepted by MAIN.
- International Candidates are requested to arrange their own international travel and MAIN will make reimbursement up to USD 500 upon presentation of factual receipts, flight coupon and boarding pass along bank details immediately after the session is over. Please note that the cost of air ticket exceeding USD 500, the difference will be covered by the participant institution.
- Participants will be lodged by MAIN for 4 nights. Meals and rooms will be provided by MAIN for international participants.
- Member institutions are requested to clear their arrears of annual contribution to MAIN before attending the training.
